Following a trip to China, Hermione created a new series of work inspired by the limestone mountains rising out of the Li and Yulong rivers in the south of the country. These pictures are transformed as a series of overlapping snapshots of reflections or mountain landscapes. Although dreamlike, the shapes of the mountains are derived accurately from drawings made at the time.

In Silent Mountains Hermione is looking at this world as a perfectly still reflection. Mountains are overlaid with mountains, as though she is seeing right through them into the distance. The perfect reflection is defined by nearer shapes that represent foliage that has an almost lace like quality. Through colour she reconnects with the memory and emotion she felt while in that magical place.

Hermione paints directly onto a birch plywood box panel. The sides are 3.8cm deep and the sides are brushed using an ‘ombre’ technique to reflect the mood and colour in the painting itself. As seen from different angles, the painting takes on a sculptural form.
