Following a trip to China in Spring, Hermione created a new series of work inspired by the limestone mountains of Guanxi rising out of the Li and Yulong rivers in the south west of the country. She was trying to capture through colour and transformation the atmosphere and memory of the feeling she had for this extraordinary landscape that was under the sea over four million years ago. The weather predominates in Aqua Sky. The storm clouds have receded and there is a glimmer of clear sunlight in the distance and there is a sensation of light and optimism emerging
These prints are a result of a process that combines ink and watercolour paintings onto Japanese Hodomuro paper together with monoprints created using hand cut paper stencils. The ink paintings are produced as separate pieces specifically for the prints that express in abstract terms her feelings and memories of the place. The monoprints are more about the physical landscape and shapes. She then photographs these and layers them together digitally to form the prints.
